September was National Preparedness Month with the theme Prepared, Not Scared. By its nature, an emergency is an unforeseen crisis. California employers may be faced with many types of natural disasters or other emergencies, including fires, earthquakes, extreme weather (storms, high heat), and floods.
Put Your Plan in Place
In California, all employers are required to have an "Emergency Action Plan" that designates the actions employers and employees must take to ensure employee safety from fire and other emergencies. All Emergency Action Plans must be in writing (employers with fewer than 10 employees may communicate the plan orally to their employees and do not need to maintain a written plan).
Ready Business, operated by the Department of Homeland Security, has resources to help businesses get prepared. Some tips for businesses including knowing what to do during and after a disaster, testing and practicing your preparedness plans, checking your insurance coverage and how you will financially handle emergencies (including payroll), and having emergency supplies available at work.
Some emergencies are caused by people, not nature—including violent acts in the workplace. Recent events have highlighted the need to be prepared in the event of such emergencies.
